Miles and William Rabun: Young Authors of My Grandma’s Backyard ö Educators

Miles Rabun (11) and William Rabun (9), the phenomenal young authors of “My Grandma’s Backyard” and also aspiring entrepreneurs, reside in Wake Forest, NC with their parents, Dereck and Yolanda Rabun. At the ages of 7 and 5, after visiting their grandmother, Kappitola Williams, in Atlanta during a summer break, Miles and William returned home with a challenge from their grandmother to write a book. So, they did.

Since completing and publishing their original transcript of My Grandma’s Backyard, a fun-filled tale that reflects two brothers’ adventures with their grandmother, Miles and William have been Visiting authors and Guest readers in schools, libraries, churches and museums and participated in several Read Across America and Read-In events. The City mayors of Raleigh, North Carolina and East Point and Atlanta, Georgia, honored Miles and William with Young Authors’ Day. Notably, in 2007, the story and music of My Grandma’s Backyard was shared with over 2000 children and adults in the British West Indies in 2007 when Miles and William completed a five (5) school Book Tour in Gros Islet, St. Lucia. Miles and William have been featured on several news programs including Good Morning Atlanta and WRAL TV’s Living the Legacy Series; In 2008 and 2009, Miles and William appeared on the Nationally Radio Broadcast of the Michael Baisden Show.WilliamBrooksRabun

My Grandma’s Backyard has been featured in a number of publications including Carolina Parent, The News & Observer, The Independent, Total Connection, and Durham’s Partnership for Children Newsletter; My Grandma’s Backyard was also included in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Bulletin. Miles and William were proud athletes on the City of Raleigh’s Brier Creek Chargers 2009 Football teams, are active Scouts, and have appeared as Young Storytellers in Broadway Arts Conservatory’s production of Children of Eden, as well as in a number of industrials, commercials and printwork.

By popular demand, at the end of 2008, Miles and William released their first professional recording, entitled My Grandma’s Backyard Fun Song inspired by their book, My Grandma’s Backyard. The book also includes a fun activity section for kids to explore and talk about their own backyard adventures along with vocabulary words, reading comprehension exercises, and games with an answer key. Miles and William Rabun will share their unique and highly rewarding book-writing experience through thought provoking discussion, music and dance.
