The St. Joseph's Historic Foundation, Inc. (SJHF)

The St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation, Inc. (SJHF) founded in 1975, is an African American cultural and educational institution deeply rooted in the historic Hayti community of Durham, North Carolina. SJHF is dedicated to advancing cultural understanding through diverse programs that examine the experiences of Americans of African descent – locally, nationally and globally. The Foundation is committed to preserving, restoring and developing the Hayti Heritage Center, the former St. Joseph’s AME Church, a National Historic Landmark, as a cultural and economic anchor to the greater Durham community.

A National Historic Landmark, the facility is situated just off the Durham Freeway, 5 minutes from downtown Durham, 10 minutes from Duke University and the Research Triangle Park, 12 blocks from N C Central University, and provides free parking for its clients.

ABC permits and insurance

All ABC Permits must be secured through the ABC Commission and approved by the Center. Insurance Required. Outside catering is allowed.

Cancellations

Cancellations not made within 2 weeks (10 business days) of an event, or 30 days for weddings / receptions / concerts will forfeit any and all deposits. All contracts and deposits must be executed prior to rental date. All payments must be received prior to any and all rental events.

Payments made the day of the event must be Cash, Money Order or a Credit Card payment.

Deliveries of rental equipment

Any deliveries of rental equipment must be done between the hours of 9am and 3pm Monday-Saturday. It is recommended that a representative be present at delivery and pick-up. THE SJHF IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY RENTAL EQUIPMENT OR ITEMS LEFT AFTER THE EVENT. SET-UP REQUIREMENTS: Please provide HHC Staff a diagram of the room set-up with your first deposit. If this information is not provided prior to your event, the HHC will not be responsible for set-up.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions will not be dismantled, removed or covered over for rental clients. It is advised that you check the schedule for the gallery prior to your rental.

Additional fees

A non-refundable reservation fee of $50 is required at the time of application to guarantee availability of space(s) and time(s) requested. This fee will be deducted from the total cost and reflected on your contract. Groups using the Performance Hall will be charged a $150 maintenance fee. Groups using the Galleries and Community Room will be charged maintenance fee of $50.

Directions and Parking

The Hayti Heritage Center is located at the corner of Fayetteville Street and Lakewood Avenue, only 2 minutes from downtown Durham, 10 blocks from North Carolina Central University, and just off of the Durham Freeway (Hwy. 147).

Your guests can easily navigate to the Center. They can find helpful directions and a map on our Directions Page.

Parking is available on the premises, or at Phoenix Square and Heritage Square Shopping Center, and on adjacent streets.
