His name was Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori, and he remained enslaved for forty years before ultimately regaining his freedom and returning to Africa.
Directed by Bill Duke (A Raisin in the Sun, A Rage in Harlem) and Andrea Kalin (Partners of the Heart). Supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Black Programming Consortium.

An Evening with Chris Rabb: Genealogy, Identity and Family Culture

Chris Rabb, consultant, writer and social commentator, will visit Durham for a one-night-only presentation on genealogy, identity and family culture, Thursday, October 18, 2007; 7-9 p.m. at the Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville Street, Durham. Mr. Rabb will discuss how genealogy and the legacy of the civil rights movement contribute to personal identity and family culture, especially for black Americans.

The Lyda Moore Merrick Gallery at the Hayti Heritage Center located at 804 Old Fayetteville St. Durham, NC presents “PAIGE PORTRAITS, Of the Famous to the Fabulous�. This exhibition will feature luscious and richly detailed portraits of late greats like Bob Marley and Ray Charles to Buddy Guy and contemporary celebrities including Mary J. Blige. Included in this exhibition are family portraits, commissions, and “Fabulous Fifteens�, which are 15 minute masterpieces, which are portraits of people drawn on the spot at various community events around the country. The artist will be on site by appointment for special events throughout the exhibition. Appointments and further information is available by calling 919-683-1709. On November 17th the annual Holiday Bazaar will be held at the Hayti Heritage Center. The artist, Greg Paige will be on site for “Portraits on the Spot� for $30.00 and up. This is the perfect gift for the holidays.

Poetry Slam is the competitive art of poetry originating in Chicago over 20 years ago, and is now practiced at venues worldwide. It is an interactive experience that involves the audience as well as the poets.
J A M B A L A Y A is a series of poetry slams that culminates annually with the formation of the Bull City Slam Team. Artists selected for the team compete throughout the country.
